Responsibility and values

For sustainable tourism

National parks and other protected areas play a significant role as tourist attractions. Utilizing these protected areas for tourism is possible when done in cooperation and aligned with conservation goals. Metsähallitus' Parks & Wildlife Finland and UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Finland follow shared principles of sustainable tourism, which are considered in all activities, as well as in collaboration with tourism entrepreneurs.

The 10 Principles of Sustainable Tourism

We are committed to working towards a more sustainable tourism industry in Finland. We encourage you to keep these principles at the forefront of your activities, as they communicate shared goals to your stakeholders.

  1. WE ENGAGE IN FAIR COLLABORATION
We develop tourism in collaboration with other operators in our region and industry. Together, we can have a greater impact on the future of society and tourism. We want our region to be a great place to live and visit now and in the future, so we make decisions that are sustainable for future generations as well. We treat everyone with respect and fairness, and we engage in only fair and honest trade.
  2. WE TAKE CARE OF NATURE
We protect the environment, landscapes, and biodiversity of our region. Our activities do not exceed the carrying capacity of nature, but instead contribute to ensuring the opportunities for a good life and the preservation of a clean living environment in our area. We also care for the well-being and respectful treatment of our animals.
  3. WE RESPECT CULTURAL HERITAGE
We cherish the cultural heritage of our region. Our goal is to authentically and respectfully present, revive, maintain, and strengthen our culture. We also understand that cultures have always developed through interaction and have learned from one another.
  4. WE PROMOTE WELL-BEING, HUMAN RIGHTS, AND EQUALITY
We treat our employees, guests, and local residents equally and respectfully, regardless of their background. We consider the specific needs of individuals in our operations. We educate, guide, and encourage our staff to act responsibly.
  5. WE PREFER LOCAL
We support the products, services, and businesses in our region, aiming to employ local people. We favor food made from Finnish raw materials. We involve residents and businesses in matters that concern them.
  6. WE INVEST IN SAFETY AND QUALITY
We ensure the safety of local residents, our staff, and our guests while adhering to laws and regulations. By prioritizing quality in the development of our services and products, we create the conditions for the continuity of our operations.
  7. WE CONSIDER CLIMATE IMPACTS
We make climate-friendly choices and work to reduce our carbon footprint. We monitor the environmental impact of tourism and aim for more efficient energy and resource use through active measurement.
  8. WE COMMUNICATE OPENLY
We boldly communicate about responsible actions in tourism in our region, as well as our future plans and visions. We want sustainable tourism in Finland to be recognized worldwide. We openly share our successes, as well as the challenges we face.
  9. WE CONTINUALLY DEVELOP OUR BUSINESS
We are ready to renew our services and products to ensure their demand in the future. A stable economy and ethical business practices provide the foundation for sustainable development of our operations.
  10. WE COMMIT TO THE PRINCIPLES OF SUSTAINABLE TOURISM
We take an active role in promoting sustainable tourism and implementing these principles. We will create a sustainable tourism action plan to guide our future actions in a more systematic way. We commit to taking measures and want to continue learning in the future.

A balanced relationship with nature

Every person has their own relationship with nature: for some, it is a place to find peace, for others, it is a livelihood, for some, it is unfamiliar, and others would spend all their time there. On our trips, you will experience a genuine connection with nature as it is in that moment and place; nature does not try to be anything other than what it is.

We take care of our customers

For us, the responsibility for our customers' safety is the foundation of all our activities. Our staff is trained, and everyone has valid first aid training. Janne-Matti is also involved in the Tunturi Lapland Vapepa (Volunteer Rescue Service) operations.

On all our trips, we prioritize safety, and enjoyment follows along the way. On freeriding trips, we plan the routes for the next day based on the weather conditions from the previous days, as well as the skill levels and preferences of the participants. We always make decisions as a group, and everyone has the right to express their opinions.

On all trips, we have a Garmin GPSMAP® 66i satellite phone, allowing for communication even when mobile networks are unavailable.
